“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood, you have no life,” Jesus had said. He was in the synagogue at Capernaum, surrounded by both His followers and by those who had sought Him out after He had fed the crowd of thousands on the other side of the Sea of Galilee.
Many of His followers began looking at each other and saying, “This is a most difficult statement– how can anyone accept it?”Realizing that there was a murmur of discontent spreading among His followers at His sayings, Jesus addressed them directly. “Does this offend you?” He asked. ” Then what will you think if you see the Son of Man ascend to Heaven again? The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are Spirit and Life. But some of you do not believe Me.” John 6:61-64 NLT
“Human effort accomplishes nothing,” Jesus said. Under the rule of sin and death, mankind had no hope of being reconciled with God. But Jesus Himself, the Son of God, came to earth to raise the dead, to make possible a relationship between God and Men.
With no possibility of reaching God on our own, all we can do is hear the message that God has sent to us in the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ. His words impart the Spirit of God, and His Words raise the dead. Like Lazarus in the tomb, dead and stinking, bound with grave clothes, our only hope is to receive the vibrant, life-giving, words of Jesus–“Come Forth!” Those who believe in Him, will also receive of His Spirit and Life; those who do not believe, remain in death.
