When all the people heard that Jesus had come back to Judea, they flocked to see him. Lazarus, too, became a celebrity– after all, no one else there had been dead and come back to life. And the religious leaders, seeing how many people were deserting them in order to believe in Jesus, decided to have Lazarus killed as well.
And so it was that Jesus, riding a donkey on His way into Jerusalem the next day, found Himself in the midst of a great crowd of people, shouting, cheering, and spreading palm branches in His path.“Hosanna!” they cried. “Blessings on the One Who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hail to the King of Israel!”
And the ancient prophecy of Zechariah came to pass. “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look! your King is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious (bringing salvation–KJV), yet He is humble, riding on a donkey– riding on a donkey’s colt…..and your King will bring peace to the nations.” Zechariah 9:9,10 NLT
Jesus Himself is a wonderful Hero! He came in the Name of God, the Highest of the High, yet He is humble, meek, riding a lowly donkey. He is the Righteousness Himself, yet His coming brought unheard of mercy and salvation to mankind. He came to His own people, the Jews, yet He brought the gift of peace with God to all the nations.
Not only Zion and Jerusalem have reason to rejoice at His coming. All of us today are still rejoicing in His coming, in His gifts of justice and righteousness and peace, and in the love and mercy and humility that moved Him to bring them.
