Jesus continued His prayer to His Father, that last night He was together with His eleven disciples before the cross.
“I have revealed You to the ones You gave Me from this world. They were always Yours. You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from You, for I have passed on to them the message You gave Me. They accepted it, and know that I came from You, and they believe You sent Me.” John 17:6-8 NLTIn passages like this, we find a wonderful security. God’s ownership of us, His calling us to His Son, and the ability of Jesus to keep safe all who come to Him is the sure, safe, and solid bedrock of our salvation.
To be sure, our part is to believe Him and obey Him, but His infinite love, His Call, and His safe keeping are the reason for our hope of eternity with Him.
In this prayer of Jesus, we see the wonderful unity between God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son. The Father sent Jesus to this earth; Jesus revealed His Father to us. The Father gave Jesus His disciples for companionship; Jesus kept them safe, passing on His Father’s words to them, showing them His Father’s care. The disciples kept His words and believed in Jesus, thereby believing in the Father Who had sent Him.
