Breakfast on the beach with Jesus was over, and Jesus turned to Peter. “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these others do?” He asked,
“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “You know I love You.”
“Then feed My lambs,” Jesus told him.
Jesus repeated His question; “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter said,” You know I love You.”A third time, He asked him “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?”
Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, You know everything. You know that I love You.”
Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked. You dressed yourself, and went wherever you wanted to go.. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you, and take you where you don’t want to go……..Follow Me.” John 21:15-19 NLT
As Peter sat on the beach with Jesus that morning, He was given a second chance. Three times before, early one morning, he had denied that He even knew Jesus. And now, with Jesus right beside him, he was asked three times “do you love Me?” Twice, he answered, “Yes, Lord, You know I love you.” By the third time, he simply said, “Lord, You know everything. You know how much I love you.”
Jesus knows…. everything. He knows everything about us. As He knew Peter, his strengths and weaknesses, and prayed for him, for his faith to endure, so he knows us, our strengths and our weaknesses, and He prays for us, too. What a comfort it is to know that He knows. As we follow Him, as we believe in Him, as we love Him with all we’ve got, He knows us; He loves us; He leads us; He keeps us safe.
