“We know,” Paul wrote in Romans 8, “that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God, and are called according to His purpose for them.” And then, Paul goes on to describe how intimately acquainted God is with His people, and how detailed is His plan for their wonderful future with Himself. It begins with God’s knowing us, long before we knew Him. God is always the first mover; He first loved us, and now we love Him; He first knew us, and now we are getting to know Him.

And, knowing us, God has chosen us to become like His Son. His plan is that His only begotten Son would become the eldest brother in a large family. When God chooses us, He adopts us into His family.

Having chosen us, God calls us. He lays His call on our hearts, and we become aware that He is reaching out to us. This is something more than a general call to all mankind; this is the personal call of God to your soul, the beginning of a personal relationship with Him. “Come to Me” was the call of Jesus to the people of Israel when He walked this earth, and it is still His call to those whom He has chosen.

When, by faith, we hear His call and come to Him, He gives us the gift of right standing with God. We could never have achieved this standing on our own; Jesus has done it all Himself, and His delight is to give His own Righteousness as a gift to all who believe in Him.

Having known us, and chosen us; having called us and given us the gift of the Righteousness of God, He sets about preparing us to share in His glory for all eternity.

“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?”  Romans 8:31 NLT
