In the introduction of his first letter to the Church in Corinth, Paul brings out a wonderful truth. He addresses the believers as “God’s Church in Corinth, you who have been called by God to be His own holy people.” 1 Corinthians 1:2 NLT
How do Christians, the flawed, imperfect human beings that we are, the sinners who rely only on the saving Grace of Jesus Christ for salvation, become the holy Church of God?
Paul answers this question: “He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus (or, because you belong to Christ Jesus), just as He did for all people everywhere who call on the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.” 1 Corinthians 1:2 NLT
There it is, in astonishing simplicity– God makes us holy because we belong to Jesus Christ, when we have called upon His Name for salvation. We are holy, not by our own efforts or achievements, but because we belong to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Once, in preparation for a short talk on holiness, I looked up the word “holy” in Webster’s Dictionary. I was astonished to find that the first definition listed was “coming from or belonging to God.” God is Holy, through and through. Everything He does is holy; all that goes out from Him is holy.
And all that He receives, all that He owns, is made holy by His ownership. Christians are made holy by Jesus Christ and by Him alone, because we belong to Him.
