In his list of gifts which God gives to His Church for the benefit of all and the building up of the Body of Christ, Paul lists the gift of discernment.
“He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:10 NLTThe gift of discernment is vitally important in the Church of Christ. The enemy of our souls, Satan, is a dark spirit with almost unlimited powers of deception. Paul tells us that he often appears as “an angel of light.”
Jesus said that God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth. He has sent His Holy Spirit to guide us into the truth, to enable us to worship God truly by His Spirit.
Satan, whose one aim is to blacken the character of God, to keep as many souls as possible from eternal life with God, uses deception and deceptive spirits to attack Christians in their worship and in their lives, to lead them away from the truth.
We live in the age of counterfeits. So many ideas, so many possibilities, are presented to entice us to replace the Joy of the Lord with an illusion of worldly pleasure, to replace the true compassionate service to God with a vague idea of doing good, to replace the life-changing Love of God with good feelings about everyone and everything.
Those given the gift of discernment by God perform a most important function in the Church. For to worship God in Spirit and in truth requires that we know His Spirit and His Truth.
