“The first man, Adam, became a living person. But the last Adam–that is, Christ– is a life-giving Spirit. What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later. Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven.” 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 NLT
Adam was the final creation of God, made in God’s own image, provided with a paradise to live in and given the responsibility of being God’s regent over the rest of creation. He was formed from the dust of the earth, and God breathed into him the Breath of Life. Adam became a living person, with the life of God within him, a perfect relationship with God available before him.
In the terrible moment of decision, Adam chose to disobey God, severing the relationship of himself and all his descendants with the God Who alone gives Life.
Many years later, according to the plan of God, Jesus Christ came to earth from Heaven. His perfect obedience while on this earth, His death in our place on the cross, and His glorious resurrection establish Him as the one with the right and the power to give life, by His Spirit, to all who will believe in Him. Even as God breathed into Adam’s body of dust the Breath of His Life, so Christ gives life to mortal men by His Life-giving Spirit. The relationship of men with God has been restored, and we are given Eternal Life by Christ.
