“It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own, ” Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth. “Our qualification comes from God. He has enabled us to be ministers of His new Covenant. This is not a covenant of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death. But under the new Covenant, the Spirit gives life. ” 2 Corinthians 3:5,6 NLT
Even the prophet Jeremiah, long before the birth of Christ, foretold the end of the old covenant and the coming of the new. For, in spite of the kindness and protection of God toward them, the Children of Israel repeatedly broke their covenant with God. But the prophet, by the Word of God, foretold the time in which God would write His laws on our hearts and our minds; He would grant that all, from the least to the greatest would know Him; and He would remember our sins no more.
As Paul writes in his other letters, the law, written on tables of stone, highlighted the sinfulness of mankind; it showed each of us our complete inability to please God. But, because of the work and the sacrifice of Christ, those who believe in Him are now offered life in the New Covenant. We are granted the Holy Spirit to direct us in this New Life– a life that will never end.
