For many people, the desire to “do it ourselves” and to “earn our own way” is very strong indeed. While this is a great attitude to have towards life in general, when dealing with Eternal Life, all efforts to earn our own way come into conflict with the Grace of God.
Paul puts it this way: “I do not treat the Grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.” Galatians 2:21 NLT.
God saw that mankind was helpless, with no hope of ever coming back to Himself, no way to become right with Him, no way to earn His favor. He sent His Son to be the way back to God, to make available to men the righteousness and favor of God. Jesus carried out this mission to perfection, and God the Father is fully satisfied and overwhelmingly delighted with His Son.
Since the gift of God’s righteousness and favor has been so spectacularly bought by Jesus, and offered so freely to those who believe, any attempts by men to “earn it ourselves” by our works are, to put it bluntly, insults to God. How can we, hopeless and helpless as we were before the gift was given, think that now we can add anything to it? As Paul says, it would be to “treat the Grace of God as meaningless.”
The Grace of God is all we need. It was all we needed at the cross. It is all we need today, to walk in the favor of God. Treasure the Grace, be grateful for the Grace, give thanks daily for the Grace of God. We can add nothing to it, but we can make His Grace the foundation of our lives.
